Jay Dyer – Laurel Canyon and the CIA Counter-Culture

The United States is a pop cultural superpower. One can debate if this is for good or for worse – but what is almost indisputable is the amount of resources government institutions ranging from universities to the military and intelligence services place on steering the direction of cultural icons such as musicians and movie stars. Today Jay Dyer, known for his incisive analysis on propaganda embedded in American films and music, joins us for a discussion on the so called counter-cultural revolution in the 1960s music scene centered around Laurel Canyon, Los Angeles. What appears to be an organic, anti-establishment movement led by artists such as Jim Morrison of The Doors is, upon closer examination, co-opted and steered by the very organizations that they publicly condemn. In America, controlled opposition would appear to take many forms.

Surprised you didn’t mention Thomas Pynchon. Old money WASP, served in the U.S. Navy, former employee of Boeing, Ivy leaguer, chronicler and mythologizer of 60s “freak” counterculture, Californian, pop music aficionado, and, of course, conspiracist.

I know there’s a number of different rabbit holes you had to avoid to keep focus, but this one might have been worthwhile.

Perhaps in the future? Great episode, as always.

    Excellent episode.
I’m curious to know your opinions on the book “Weird Scenes inside the Canyon”. I am reading it now after listening to the podcast and while I don’t find any single detail too fantastical, there seems to be a lot of “it’s been said” and “some have stated” as references in the book. Just wondering your thoughts on how trustworthy a source it is.

I have been listening to The Myth since you began posting, and has developed into a fantastic podcast! I can’t say enough how good it has become really top notch. For this subject matter you needed to get Jan Irving from formally Gnosticmedia now Logosmedia.com. Jan has been doing real deep research finding sources government, private and doing interviews for many years now regarding CIAs MK ultra programs and 60s counter culture manipulation. Jan has also done work exposing Gordon Wasson the supposed discoverer of Magic Mushrooms and his connection to the CIA. Jay Dyer has been using Jan’s work and Dave McGowan’s and gives no additional material at all, just gleaning Jan’s and Daves work. Dave has since passed away unfortunately but Jan is alive and well and on youtube as well and having his own site. So please get Jan Irving on your podcast please for a MK Ultra or 60s Drug Culture ep, his knowledge on this subject is very extensive, he is the go to guy at this point.

If your skeptical or would like to know more check out his BRAIN Database that is massive database that is searchable showing all the thousands of linkages of the cast of MK Ultra movers and shakers, guy deserves true praise and credit.
